The name, ‘Brentwood’ is thought to derive from ‘burnt wood’ and the town has an interesting history which dates back to the 12th century when it is thought to have its origins as a forest clearing, hence the name. Situated on the old London to Colchester road and about twenty-five miles north-east of central London, Brentwood was a key stopover point for pilgrims journeying to Canterbury in the Middle Ages. The town had a chapel dedicated to St Thomas Becket and the chapel ruins remain to this day in the town.
Famous for Brentwood School founded in 1557, in the 17th century, Brentwood’s location made it a busy coaching town with numerous inns and hotels to accommodate travellers. More recently, the old Catholic parish church which dates to 1861 became a cathedral in 1917 and then the whole building was remodelled and enlarged between 1989 and 1991 by Dreihaus winning architect, Quinlan Terry, a favourite of the Prince of Wales. The money for the scheme was donated anonymously.
Brentwood shot to fame in the 21st century because of its pivotal role in the hit TV series, ‘The Only Way Is Essex’ or TOWIE as it is known amongst its fans. Much of the series is filmed in the town which has been a real bonus for retailers. If you are thinking of getting married in Brentwood or looking for boutiques, health spas and beauty salons to complement your look, then there are plenty of niche and stylish independents to choose from and some even have a Towie connection. Surrounded by pretty countryside, there are a whole host of beautiful wedding venues within a short drive of Brentwood with Tudor barns, country houses and picturesque manor houses to choose from.
Brentwood is popular for families because of its excellent secondary schools including the independent and historic, Brentwood School, and there isn’t a more glamorous place for students to celebrate their prom night.
